Welcome Aboard Mariners Alike - Malaysia Rule The Waves

its hard to describe how a man could left everything he had on land and went out to sea...
its even harder to describe how bright the stars at night and how fresh the cool morning air when you are in the middle of the ocean...
the hardest thing is to describe how close you are to death and how god could took your life at any time...
come to sea and see for yourself...

GOD SPEED AND FAIR WINDS

come to sea and see for yourself

this blog is dedicated to mariners, navigators and seafarers alike, merchant or naval for others to had a glimpse of what we do and what we faced in the vast blue oceans.

adik2..sebut kaaappaaal....

hahaha...

ok2..serius..

bulk carrier...petak2 tu namanya hatchcover..org kampung panggil tutup petak..dlm bleh main futsal..

ini lak kapal kargo...kapal kargo ni pun ade ramai adik beradik...yang paling tua di panggil bulk carrier...ini kapal bawak bahan mentah seperti bijih besi atau arang batu dlm kuantiti yg besar...tepung dan gula yg mak korang simpan kat dapur tu pun kapal ni lah yg bawak...kadang2 habuk kayu pun dia bawak...hampas kelapa sawit...besi sekerap...macam2 lah yg kuantitinya x tercapai akalmu...

kapal kotak2 yg laju...xde tempat main futsal tp byk tempat nak tuang keje..hehehe

kapal kontena ni adalah kapal yg membawa apa sahaja barangan didalam kotak sepanjang 20 atau 40 kaki yg dipanggil kontena...semua benda yg ade kat rumah korang pernah duduk dalam kontena ni dan pernah di bawak oleh kapal kontena..dari kasut adidas..tv plasma...i pod...dapur gas...daging lembu argentina...kereta kebal..bas ekspress...spare part kapal terbang...semua bende lah...x larat nak citer...mayat orang yg dah mati pun di bawak dalam kontena ni..tapi kontena dia ade air cond laa dan dipanggil reefer...ala cam peti sejuk kat umah tu..wat simpan sayur..ikan..belacan..lalala...

ini kapal cam Mistral..tapi xde flight deck..cat kaler civillian...leh bwk byk keta kebal...serius

kapal ro-ro atau roll on-roll off lak adalah kapal yg dibina khusus utk membawa automobil...baik kereta..lori..bas..apa saja lah yg digerakkan dgn enjin 1.6 keatas dan menggunakan petrol atau diesel...kapal ni klakar skit rupenye dan ade gaya kapal pengangkut amfibia tapi dalam die punya masyuk..leh bawak keta kebal weyh...semua kereta import berjenama dan mewah yg dijual sepanjang jalan ampang dan juga di tempat2 oleh kedai2 penerima AP kerajaan dibawa masuk ke dlm negara dgn kapal ni....beli juta2..dtg naik kapal je...igt naik roket...

imej default kapal chin chew...byk derrick..nama kapal dlm tulisan mandarin atau kantonis...

kapal general kargo lak adalah abang paling tua dlm kategori kapal kargo nie...die nie x kira ape jenis komoditi..semua dia bawak...kontena die bawak..minyak die bawak...keta kebal pun die nak bwak..tapi sayang kapal ni dah hampir pupus sebab kapal yg sy sebutkan sebelum ni telah ambil alih hampir semua tugasan dia..skarang nie leh jumpa yg kecik2 je...dan dipanggil kapal chin chew...

adeh..bru basic...yg advance blum lagi nih...nnt ar smbung..x larat nih...

entri Bahasa Malaysia...

mentari membelah awan dan menyuluh lautan...seolah mendapat rahmat tuhan...

kenapa dok tgh laut best...??

sebab angin die sejuk dan udaranya segar...
langit kadang2 len jadi amat biru..true blue sky..
kalau ade awan...sinaran mentari akan membelah awan dan menyuluh permukaan lautan...cam dpt rahmat tuhan..
di malam hari...bintang2 menyinari dan begemerlapan...
dan dgn jelas kita dpt lihat coretan tahi bintang..
bulan nampak jelas dan amatlah terang...
kalau cuaca amat baik..laut bersinar macam cermin...
ikan lumba2 akan follow kapal...
xyah pakai camera SLR..tangkap gambar confirm lawa...
VHF senyap..xde suara sumbang
time ni lah nak wat celestial observation
nak melalak ke..nak parti ke..sapa pun x tau...

 kenapa x best lak..??

kalau ribut topan..kapal rolling gila2..abis brg terabur...
time watch..ade je yg mabuk..
kalau hujan...ape pun x nampak..
time ni lah x leh nak tepon sape2..nak online pun x leh..
kalau hari cerah..kene keje atas deck..bosan..
xde bende lain nak tg..laut..laut..laut..
astro xde..kne tgk vcd hindustan..
VHF senyap gila..xde kapal lain sembang2..
nak kene wat celestial observation..
ade parti..tapi dok main kuda..PS2 xde

manusia kadang2 x bersyukur...aku pun camtu gak...

muse - uprising

The paranoia is in the bloom, the P-R
Transmissions will resume
They`ll try to push drugs
Keep us all dumbed down and hope that
We will never see the truth around
(So come on!)

Another promise,another scene,another
A package not to keep us trapped in greed
With all the green belts wrapped around our minds
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined
(So come on!)

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious

Interchanging mind control
Come let the revolutions take its toll if you could
Flick the switch and open your third eye, you`d see that
We should never be afraid to die
(So come on!)

Rise up and take the power back,it`s time that
The fat cats had a heart attack, you know that
Their time is coming to an end
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious

Segitiga Bermuda - Ia tidak lagi misterius...

sistem hurikan merentangi segitiga bermuda - keje iblis atau keje tuhan..??

entri Bahasa Malaysia...

story of watchkeeping officer - x pass lagi oral exam aku...?

merenung masa depan yg belum pasti...

entri bahasa Malaysia..sy x suka tulis bahasa Melayu..cam rasis je bunyi nye..

Disember 14 2009...

sebulan lebih menuggu utk 2nd attempt...aku digagalkan atas sebab ketidak kompetenan dan kecelaruan knowledge ttg radar dlm masa satu jam...

org tua aku dah bising..."ape masalah ko nie..susah sangat ke exam ko..?"

sape yg dah pass dan ade knowledge cam master 25 tahun bawak kapal memang akan kate senang dan org tua aku x terkecuali...aku...?

untuk rekod..ini adalah major setback aku yg ketiga untuk 2009...yg mana first setback aku adalah fail dlm radar course..menyebabkan aku kene recourse dan duit aku sebanyak rm1800 akan melayang...2nd setback adalah gagal oral exam first attempt bulan 10 ari tu...

aiseh...org lain dah pass..dah naik kapal..merasa duit gaji kompeni..aku dok mengagau lagi dengan buku practical navigation dan regulations yg maha dahsyat banyaknya utk di hafal...

okey fine...aku x salahkan examiner sebab tugas dia memang utk meneliti level of competency setiap calon bg membolehkan mrk utk berkhidmat diatas kapal2 yg didaftarkan di malaysia supaya pada akhir hari bukan mereka yg dipersalahkan kalau berlaku kecelakaan atau kematian atau kemalangan...dan bukan tugas dia utk menggagalkan calon melainkan calon itu sendiri tidak memenuhi kehendak industri...

sekarang aku dah nampak...bukan senang nak senang dan bukan susah nak susah...dah bersusah susah pun masih dlm keadaan susah....hmm..luck mmg xde hujung tahun nie...karma dalam keadaan bercelaru dan jiwa penuh dengan kemaksiatan...

maka..kembalilah aku kepada buku2 yg menimbun utk diulangkaji semula...knowledge aku masih belum cukup utk meyakinkan examiner yg aku layak utk meredah samudera raya yg penuh kecelaruan dan ketidakpastian...

kepada yg sama2 x pass dgn aku dlm attempt kali ni...kita blaja lagi...coz we were meant to learn life the hard way...!!

kepada yg dah pass...congrats guys and u deserve all the hard work...aku akan cuba kejar korang... dan aku masih belum give up lagi...!!!

better luck next time...

towards the heaven i seek guidance...

towards the heaven i seek guidance...

i see three stars in a straight line...inside constellation Orion the hunter...
the middle star in the line named Al-Nilam...
Betelgeuse is the hunter left shoulder...Bellatrix is his right shoulder...
while Rigel being his leg that stands forward....

i gaze from Betelgeuse to see Procyon...in constellation Canis Minor...one of Orion hounds...
right behind Orion is Canis Major..the greater hunting hound...where Sirius can be seen...
Orion the hunter fought against Taurus the bull...star Aldebaran formed one of the bull great horn...
above the hunter..the Gemini twin named Castor and Pollux oversees the fight between Orion and Taurus...

but Orion the hunter life wont end by Taurus the raging bull...but a by the sting of Scorpio represented by the star Shaula at the hunters leg...the head of the killer scorpion is the star Antares...
and thus the hunter dies...

twilights come and the stars came out...

observations were made and position were determined
i gaze the heavens and i calculate my errors...
and i seek the guidance of the hunter for other stars...
oh faithful and bright ones..by thee light i navigate

formosa product brick - and the straits of malacca were burning...

fire is bad for ship and people...bad fire..!!

and all hell break loose...it began right after an arguement from both ship regarding right of way...the bulk carrier MV Ostende Max and a product tanker MT Formosa Product Brick collided off Port Dickson...fires and explosions from the product tanker can be seen from more than 20 nautical miles...

that is formosa..and she was engulfed in a raging inferno...

even ships laying up in the Kuala Sungai Baru off port limit anchorage close to my academy could see the burning inferno...my mates said that he saw a flash of fire at 2130H...off Tanjung Tuan Lighthouse..

radio chatter were high....VTS were calling a rescue operations...and diverting all traffics to keep out from the burning tanker....

this video were taken by a vessel passing the burning tanker in the traffic seperation scheme at the Straits of Malacca...

that is formosa on the next day...the whole accomodation and the engine room were caught by fire

the next day...9 crew were still missing...fire still burning on the tanker and shipping were advice to avoid the stricken vessel... vessels from various maritime agency and salvage team were at scene to control the situation...

ostende max..she had a bent bulbous bow and her paint were damaged because of the fire...

search and rescue were conducted to find the missing crew...while the bulk carrier were towed back to Port Dickson for investigation...Ostende Max had minor damage and her crew survived the incident...still there is no news about the crew from Formosa and it is feared that some of them might have been trapped inside the ship....

...all the missing crew were found by firefighters inside the tanker few days later in various locations onboard....nothing left but remnants of bones...and identification were made complicated since they were burnt beyond recognition...fire were taken out but precautions were still taken to ensure no re ignition occurs...remaining cargo onboard were salvaged and transferred to her sister ship...

what happened to both ship is unknown...nothing had been heard regarding the accident but surely investigation and inquiry is still in session and the final verdict and case report on the accident will be issued...

prayers to all nine mariners who perished in the inferno..may their souls rest in the sea of tranquility......and may this be a lesson for all that the sea is dangerous...and we make mistakes...

HSV - high speed military sealift capability

looking for high speed sealift capablity...the ferries are the answer...

The success of high speed catamaran technology had caught the eyes of the world only superpower to meet military logistic demands for transporting troops and equipments to the theater of operations in the last 10 years.

Civllian high speed ferries and catamaran were leased and chartered to the military and knowned as HSV (High Speed Vessel) to meet logistic demands and at the same time to evaluates its effectiveness and capabilities.

MV WestPac Express (HSV- 4676)

civillian catamaran turned military vessel...the westpac express...

This craft is chartered to USMC for Military Sealift Command. Her role is to transport military personnel and equipment to the objective at high speed while at the same time being the USN testbed and technology demonstrator before going for a proper military high speed craft.

WestPac Express is a civillian high speed ferry built by Austal Limited, an Australian company with shipbuilding expertise were focused on high speed ferries and catamaran technology. The effectiveness of WestPac Express in her had convinced USN with agreement to use Austal Limited high speed craft design for the Joint High Speed Vessel programme.

her cargoes includes armoured personnel carrier...

WestPac Express was chartered by the Third Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF) in 2001 for the rapid deployment of Marine battalions and equipment in the Western Pacific for training exercises.

The contract involves an initial ‘proof of concept’ period of approximately two months, but it is anticipated that this will be extended for a longer period once the vessel demonstrates its ability to meet the Marines’ needs.

helicopters...loaded through her stern ramp...

During this period the number of aircraft used and time in transit were reduced while plus permitted more equipment and personnel to be transported as a complete unit. This had convinced the USN and USMC to carry out future programme for this type of vessel.

light armoured vehicles and 950 troops...in one vessel

This particular vessel have the capacity to accomdate 970 troops and a cargo area which consist of two vehicle dec and a cargo deck capable of accomodating 153 units of HUMMWV or 12 AAV`s and 20 LAV`s.It is also known that rotary wing aircraft are also carried in this vessel to support military operations.

WestPac Express are powered by 4 Caterpillar 3618 diesel engine producing 7200 kW at 1050 rpm each and propelled by water jet propulsion with cruising speed up to 33 knots.

HSV-X1 Joint Venture

she was a ferry called devil cat before being conscripted as hsv-x1....

The Joint Venture is formerly a civillian high speed catamaran car/passenger ferry built by Incat of Tasmania before being intially chartered to USN and then to the US Army for experimental, evaluation and test programme.

Her induction into military service were due to the effectiveness and flexibility of WestPac Express in conducting military transport operations while at the same had proved to be cost and logistically effective in bringing in the troop to operation theater compared to airlift operations.

flight deck for helicopter operations..

HSV-X1 had the ability to carry 325 troops and 400 tonnes of military equipment together with a flight deck to support helicopter operation and rapidly reconfigurable for different operations and roles.Other roles includes miltary command vessel and high speed long range transport vessel.

stern ramp on her starboard side for roll-on roll-off vehicle loading...

HSV-X1 is powered by 4 Caterpillar diesel engine and propelled through water jet propulsion.

Service of HSV-X1 with USN and USAV was ended in 2006 and were returned to its owner the TT Line before being purchased and refitted for civillian use by Isle of Man Steam Packet Company in 2008.

HSV-2 Swift

multirole catamaran...from military transport, technology demonstrator to command and support

HSV-2 Swift is a hybrid catamaran leased to USN from Incat of Tasmania with role as mine countermeasures and sea basing platform.

The HSV-2 is thoroughly used for various naval and amphibious operations and equipped with facilities to support the operations.A helicopter flight deck, strengthened vehicle deck, small boat and unmanned vehicle launch and recovery capability, and an enhanced communications suite are among the facilities and enhancement fitted on this vessel. Her 2670m square cargo deck is capable of carrying 605 tonne of cargo.

stern ramp..similar to hsv-x1 and westpac express...to accomodate cargo loading and offloading

HSV-2 also serve as modular shipbuiling design platform where it had the capability to be refitted to support any mission without requiring long shipyard periods. The vessel were also flexible, having the ability to transport military vehicles and troops in a number of deployments including disaster relief and humanitarian operations.

45 knots and 3500nm...loaded with full gear troops and vehicles

Powered by 4 Caterpillar 3618 diesel engine,HSV-2 had a maximum cruising speed of 45 knots and capable of operating up 3500nm range.

The vessel were also equipped with armaments namely the Mk 96 with 25mm/40mm stabilize gun and Mk 45 Snake Eye with Mk 19 grenade launcher.

story of watchkeeping officer - my second ship is a gas carrier...

this is nine mike tango echo...s.s tenaga tiga...calling on channel one six...

yes...unexpectedly and out of the ordinary...my second ship was a gas carrier...a 280m long LNG carrier named Tenaga Tiga with 130 000 cum capacity of methane which were carried inside her 5 cargo tanks...she is no 3 and had 5 sisters altogether in the fleet....

it is out of the ordinary at that time for cadets registered under the main fleet of my shipping consortium to sailed on a gas carrier since those who went on board are elite and bright students with CGPA above 3.5...but then i was lucky for the human resource had no choice but to send me on that ship...they had no other ship but the decades old Tenaga...

she was a behemoth...a gargantuan ship that even dwarfed my previous ship.she had a large LNG logo on both side of her hull to indicate that she is a large gas carrying ship and could pose serious threat if anything bad happens...that is what the guys on the ship said...i say any ship is all the same...

that`s her few decades ago...now she had a different paint job...

the old lady as i called her is among the oldest ship in my shipping consortium fleet..being built by the French in 1981 and still gallantly serving and sailing across the globe..

the day i met her she was laying quietly at algas anchorage, singapore and were destined to sailed to algeria north africa...at algeria,we had to wait for 2 weeks until finally we were off hired and directed to anchor at gibraltar for the next 2 month.

that`s rock of gibraltar...the whole rock is under UK rule..the rest is Spanish territories...

the best part of this voyage is that the old lady is due for dry-docking...after 2 month laying at gibraltar outer port limit we went back home and stayed for another 3 month at MMHE pasir gudang.

Tenaga had a full refurbishment.she was given a new air conditioning system, radar set, mooring and anchor windlass were brand new, lavatories were renovated while her galley were stripped off and had been given new equipments.

her tanks and cargo equipments were serviced, new elevator for the ship, decks were freshly painted and her shipside were sand blasted before given new paint coating...it was hectic, hot and dirty at pasir gudang...

filthy and dirty old lady...

i left her while she stayed on the block in dock number 1...i wont forget her master, officers and crew whom almost all are malaysian.knowledge and experience is important they say...regardless of type and size of ship...although at first i was looked down for coming from the fleet..but then they had faith that even a layman from the fleet could work onboard a gas carrier..if given the chance...

leaving her for good...

and the best part was signing off close at home....and that was my shipboard experience during my 2nd year in the academy....long gone those memories...while new and exciting experience awaits....

story of watchkeeping officer - my first ship is a tanker....

this is motor tanker bunga melati satu..nine mike charlie hotel three...calling on channel one six...

yes..my first shipboard experience during my 2nd year as cadet were onboard a tanker...a chemical tanker to be exact...the ship i went onboard was the oldest among seven in the fleet...

her name was MT Bunga Melati Satu...a 30 000 deadweight,21 000 gross tonnage chemical/palm oil carrier of the nation largest shipping consortium...she ain`t pretty as her gas counterparts but she knew her stuff...and what a tough boat she is...

this is where i met her..rotterdam

i met her at Rotterdam, at Vopak terminal...she was discharging her cargo of palm oil products.she had 32 tanks meant for vegetable and chemical commodities...

her cargo varies..palm oil products are the norm...she carry thousand tonnes of refined palm olein...cooking oil to be exact...and sometimes crude palm products...a sweet smelling oil which is used in confectionery and food industries... acid distillates were also among the commodities...

after tank cleaning...we were given bonus for a job well done...

sometimes she had in her tanks chemicals of various type and hazards...phenol being the most hazardous...styrene and acetone...para-xylene and  nonanol....and petrochemicals and others...this commodities shorten lifes but to my amazement...this are the basic ingredients use to made our daily home products...

with all these cargoes....she had her tank washed after every discharge...to ensure no residue is left on the coating to ensure that the next cargo is not contaminated...and the worst to avoid her from being detained or had her charterer off hired her....

decks of the melati class chemical tankers...on right is melati satu and left is melati 6...

she ain`t pretty...her deck were oily and her paint job were rotting away because of the seas and rust...but her cargo and navigation equipment were working well....her accommodation were humble and decent...not too small and not too large...not too lavish and yet not too cheap...

this particular ship is built by Hyundai...a Korean mega-builders and were launched in the 90`s...she had a few mishaps along her career but until now she is one strong lady...same goes with her sisters...

kugiran di malam tahun baru...my captain with the guitar and my 2nd mate with the drums

the master of this ship is a foreign nationals hailed from the Phillipines...he doesnt amaze me much but he do know how to rock the house and have fun while the officers were among the best experienced men who had sailed on the sisterships...the second mates were among them...both men were old timer...and i learnt alot from this men both in life experiences and job experiences...above all..everyone loves to party...

we sailed together to on the northern hemisphere...never to the south...and never to the new world...from the far-east to middle-east to western europe and back to our homeland and again to europe....across the oceans and seas through storms and gales...through calm days and bright nights....

final loading port before signing off..algeciras, spain

the final days with her was the most memorable...it was the second trip to Rotterdam and were heading back east...i left her at Port Said...while transitting Suez Canal...it was July and the air was cool....it was hard to say goodbye..but every meeting ends with parting...that is how life goes...

until now she is my love..love of my life..she is the one who thought me the harshness and the gentleness of the ocean...the one who made me realize that life as navigators aren`t an easy one...where responsibilities are paramount and being out of focus could spell death to me or others onboard...

last tango...

i head back home leaving her trotting the globe to places she had been or never been before...she won`t be alone for she had a gang of men to look after and handle her...who had come and go...and long to come to be with her again....i myself is looking forward to meet her again in near future...

-come to sea and see for yourself-
